Mississauga architecture an innovative pastiche

Absolute World Towers represents 21st Century architectural style

Absolute World is a residential condominium twin tower skyscraper complex in the five tower Absolute City Centre development in Mississauga, Ontario. The project is being built by Fernbrook Homes and Cityzen Development Group. With the first three towers completed (Absolute City Centre 1 & 2 and Absolute Vision), the last two towers (Absolute World 4 & 5) are presently under construction. Standing at 50 and 56 storeys, these two skyscrapers will be the tallest of any built in a Canadian suburban city.

The public was invited to vote for the favourite designs which were on display at the Square One Shopping Centre as well as online, along with the judging panel. The voting was to stop on March 22, 2007 with the winning design announced from CN Tower on March 28, 2007 at 10:30 am. On March 28, at 10:30 am, Yansong Ma, founder of the MAD office, Beijing/China architectural design firm was announced the winner. Sales were to start in May 2007 with construction beginning in late 2007, and anticipated completion in 2009. Within days of the announcement, the building had been nicknamed the "Marilyn" due to its curvaceous, hourglass figure likened to actress Marilyn Monroe. In April 2007, it was announced that Burka Varacalli Architects, a Toronto firm, was hired as MA local partner and construction would start within 6 months with completion in 2010. As of January 1, 2010, the first tower was at the 22nd level while the work on the 2nd tower has begun. As of February 2011, the first tower is at 56 stories and 2nd tower is nearing its 50th level. Both towers are expected to be completed by August 2011.

The Marilyn Monroe of buildings

Absolute World Tower 4 was dubbed Marilyn Monroe by Sam Sibai during the announcement of the winning Yansong Ma design, because it "looked like Marilyn Monroe" the curves and the fragile yet mesmerizing feel gave this building the nickname the Marilyn Monroe Building. The Absolute World Tower 5 was characterized with bold male features, and less curves, as such, it is known as The Marilyn Monroe Mate.

The tower twists 180 degrees from the base to the top, making it very similar to Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden. The structural design is done by Sigmund Soudack & Associates Inc- a Toronto based almost 40 years old structural engineering firm.

Mississauga Civic Centre

The Mississauga Civic Centre is the city hall of the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The Centre was finished in 1987 by Jones and Kirkland and stands at 92 metres or 302 feet. The design was influenced by farmsteads which once occupied much of Mississauga. The barn-like structure design which includes a clock tower was chosen as the winner of a design competition that included 246 submissions. It is located near Square One Shopping Centre and is home to the City Council of Mississauga.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were part of the opening ceremonies for the new civic centre in July 1987. Prince Andrew's impression of City Hall was "It's quite remarkable". However, the media had fun with his quote about the building due to local criticism of the structure and the fact that the media found his response to be less than sincere.

Mississauga resident Don Cherry who is most notable for being on Hockey Night In Canada and a Canadian icon added fuel to the fire when he stated that the new City Hall reminded him of his home town Kingston, Ontario because it looked more like a penitentiary than a City Hall.
